Start. Conceived by the Cunard Line as the world's biggest ship, the keel of No. 534 was laid in February 1931, at the shipyard of John Brown & Co. Ltd., Clydebank. Before Endeavour left Gosport, England last fortnight Herreshoff shipyards at Bristol, R. I. received a cable: "Can you please refit Endeavour when she arrives?Sopwith." Although it is contrary to custom for a challenger and defender to be refitted at the same yards, the shipyard cabled that it would be pleased to do so.
