Workers at Marinship shipyard (Sausalito, Calif.) wanted to name one of their tankers after Mt. Tamalpais (pronounced tam-el-pie'-iss), in whose shadow they work. The Navy said no. Reason: Navy regulations say that oilers shall be named after rivers, not mountains. The workers then took a leaf out of the Navy notebook. They persuaded the Marin County Board of Supervisors to christen an unnamed creek Tamalpais. Last week the Navy stiffly notified the yard that it was all right to name their oiler S.S. Tamalpais -after the stream...
...Henry Kaiser's shipyards in the Northwest went back to a seven-day week. The reason: inability to obtain 10,000 additional workers needed to keep pace with tanker and transport building schedules. But at the Bethlehem-Sparrows Point Shipyard at Baltimore, the keel was laid for a sleek, 9,902-ton freighter intended for the postwar services of the American Export Lines to Mediterranean and Indian ports...
Shipbuilder Henry J. Kaiser last week gave Shipbuilder Andy Higgins tit for tat. A year ago, while H. J. scrambled desperately in Seattle to get shipyard workers, Andy Higgins blandly ran full-page ads in Seattle papers, urging workers to come to his New Orleans plants. Last week, hot on the heels of the Government's cancellation of plane and marine-engine contracts at Higgins, Shipbuilder Kaiser had his scouts set up a desk in the U.S. Employment Service office in New Orleans, sign up Higgins workers as fast as they were laid...
...Love a Soldier (Paramount) treats frivolously a not -altogether - frivolous theme. An enticing young shipyard worker (Paulette Goddard) spends her days welding metal ships, her nights welding soldiers' hearts. Meantime she clings to the notion that a young woman should consider it her duty to kiss the boys goodbye, but hardly ever do much else for them...
...mortified is Hinky Dink's boy that he heroically hoodwinks his mother into thinking he really is leathernecking it on Guadalcanal, writes his girl (Ella Raines) that he has fallen in love with someone else and goes miserably off to work in a shipyard...
