...shiver with more than cold," one of his early sentences begins, "and into my trained academic mind there push, in all their luminosity, Faust's lowering words to Mephistopheles." The lines he goes on to quote do not, as it happens, come within half a mile of the subject of vampires. Professor Wolf, as he explains, was sitting one sunny day on the Berkeley campus watching girls and feeling randy when he happened to think of Faust. And so? So nothing; Wolfs trained academic mind drops the thought, satisfied that it has served its purpose as a lyrical prelude...

...Bell's revelation that Virginia endured ritual sexual molestations by her half-brother for years during her childhood is simply the missing link in our understanding of her tenuous sense of her own physical sexuality." The episode seared her mind: forty-five years later she could record. "I still shiver with shame at the memory of my half-brother, standing me on a ledge, aged about 6 or so exploring my private parts." ...starts low and loose but builds and swells, pushed by Garcia's merciless use of the wah-wah, until it drains everyone who hears it--both musicians and audience. The story is High Noonish but their rendition is so powerful and tense that it makes you alternately sweat and shiver. Since the song is overwhelming in concert. I'm not sure that my judgment is objective--the Dead sound system, the crowd, and the visual presence of the New Riders are all missing from the album. Despite this, for those who have seen them or have vivid imaginations, this song...
