...year to the U.S. balance of payments deficit, a single strong U.S. overseas airline may find more support in Washington now than it has in the past. But the sheer size of the proposed line-bigger even than the proposed combination of Eastern and American airlines-will send a shiver through CAB. Approval of the merger would also end a longstanding CAB policy of denying domestic routes...

...sight of students in the caps, ribbons and bandages of dueling fraternities sends a shiver up the spines of many Germans: the custom identifies so readily with Wehrwillen-the will to war. "These fools must be stopped," snaps one of the protesting professors. A less angry and even more telling criticism came recently from a Ghanaian student who discussed dueling on television. Pointing to his own tribal-scarred face, the Ghanaian remarked: "This isn't done in Africa any more, and frankly I can't understand why you still do it to each other in civilized Germany...

Shawn's oyster rather than an uncrackable egg. The shiver of terror that should accompany the transformation of the timidest soul into the tawdriest heel is thus lost. In scenes of inane family cackle, and in the spectacle of a cuckolded husband applauding his wife flagrante delicto ("Congratulations, Heloise. You're getting better every time"), Playwright Marceau approaches the existential nausea toward life that animates the "theater of the absurd" (TIME, Dec. 22). Sartre and Camus have obviously influenced Marceau, but the guiding philosophy behind Broadway's Egg seems to be Minsky...

...fish inspires such zeal or exacts such sacrifice from its pursuers as the huchen of the Alps. He who would snare a huchen (pronounced Aooken) must fight his way to riverbanks through drifts of snow, shiver for hours in near-zero weather temperatures, often squinting at his line through a needling spray of sleet. For only in winter's nadir does Europe's mightiest game fish begin to strike as it gets ready to spawn in the spring. And only when the weather is abominable-visibility poor, the river lashed by storm-will the wary huchen flash...
