...window that tied up traffic last week was at Franklin Simon's. Designers Claire Lang, James Gosling and George Perkins reproduced the whole door of a church and an adjoining stained-glass window (made out of Cellophane and shoe dye), a lawn with real grass. Through the church door paraded a dozen live models, women in spring street clothes, men in frock coats, military uniforms and mufti. Once a day six choristers from the Paulist choir stepped into the window and caroled Gregorian chants, their shrill-sweet descant relayed by amplifier to the street outside. The Franklin Simon window...
Moved to investigate his new-found property and ferret out the union leaders who hanged him, dyspeptic J. P. disguises himself as a clerk in his shoe department. He finds out a lot he never knew about people who have to work for a living. A pompous section manager (Edmund Gwenn) rules him with acidulous tyranny. A comely young clerk, Mary Jones (Jean Arthur), tries to teach him the tricks of the trade, lends him 50? when she interprets his remark about never eating lunch to mean that he is broke...

Favorite was little Gerard Cote, 27-year-old newsdealer of St. Hyacinthe, Que. Cote, recently voted Canada's No. i athlete, weighs only 128 lb. Three years ago, he won the International snow-shoe marathon in the record-breaking time...
Into the mails last week went Montgomery Ward's regular annual bargain catalogue (good until Feb. 28). It met a roughly 10% cut announced two days earlier by Sears, Roebuck (except on refrigerators). Although leather prices have risen 10% since August, the catalogue's shoe prices are down around 10%. Grey-goods prices have risen 15%, but its cotton sheet and print items are down around 14%. Farm prices have risen 6% since August, and these reductions should give the farm section of the mail-order customers a powerful lift in buying power...
