...Line trains that will shoot you down under Mass Ave are the top of Boston's subway fleet. The Red Line has the plushy-cushioned seats, and it has the milk run through the city from the local (elitist) seat of higher learning to the local pseudo-quaint suburban town of Quincy Center. The Red Line is good for long, dark rushes under the streets, but is also boring. Its best feature is on board--the spectrum of people riding between the Square and Boston. But beyond Washington station the passengers get boringly respectable and well-dressed...

...Larry Woods immediately chartered a plane to get to the remote Brushy Mountain state prison, while Joe Kane and Jef McAllister of our Washington bureau drove all night to reach the scene. As they covered the story on the ground, a TIME photographer was airborne in a helicopter to shoot pictures of the search. Houston Bureau Chief George Taber went to Atlanta to talk with black leaders and with Ray's past and present lawyers. Responding to a warning from Prime Minister Ian Smith that Zambian support for black nationalist guerrillas might lead to pre-emptive strikes, Kaunda dramatically announced that ua state of war" existed between his country and Rhodesia. To prove the point, the Zambians lobbed several mortar shells at the resort town of Victoria Falls...

...found the experience excruciatingly painful," he says, "and I've discovered what I knew all along: I am not a film director. I'm a film maker. A film director is somebody who directs people-large operations. I like to sit down behind a camera and shoot pretty pictures and then cut them together and watch the magic come as I combine images and tell stories." The director, he goes on, is like a general sitting in the war room and sending other men to battle. He calls the film maker a lieutenant who actually leads his patrol...
