...Dandy and the Tradesman. Elegiac, autumnal and melancholy though it is, Home is shot through with rueful humor. Playwright Storey subtly draws an ironic parallel between the plight of the two men and the fate of England. The word island recurs: England shorn of empire, reduced to her physical boundaries, but with names and deeds of the past intoned like a faint requiem of glory-Newton, and Sir Walter Raleigh and the discovery of penicillin. The sceptered isle has become a gleamless cinder on the tides of history...

Greatest Story? To a large extent, Webber and Rice share Judas' doubts. "It happens," says Rice, "that we don't see Christ as God. but as simply the right man at the right time in the right place. It is a great and inspiring story, though." Shorn of the Resurrection, of course, the Passion and what preceded it are something less than "the greatest story ever told." Perhaps that is why Webber and Rice, both of whom were brought up in the Anglican Church but eventually rejected it, have not worked too hard in Superstar...

...three long-haired youths from neighboring Malaysia, the young men were held in jail for 17 hours until they consented to being given short haircuts. A barber was duly fetched, and each of the young Malaysians was required to pay 330 to have his long locks trimmed. When the shorn youths returned home, their countrymen were outraged-and reacted accordingly.
