...hear such talk now. Experts are openly comparing Islamic terrorism to communism and fascism, ideologies that retained the loyalty of devotees despite occasional setbacks. "Al-Qaeda is not just an organization," says Ranstorp. "It's a movement. We shouldn't gauge its success through a short-term prism." It took a year, but recent attacks suggest that the dispersal of terrorists from Afghanistan back to their home bases reinvigorated local extremist groups--among them Jemaah Islamiah in Indonesia--with an influx of logistical and financial resources. ...Some influential Americans, including senior Pentagon political appointees, argue that Washington's current concerns are short-term, and that it is China that presents the abiding challenge to American might. In fact, the Bush Administration came into office focused on Beijing as its likely long-term security headache. At the time, a Pentagon report classified China as "a military competitor." First and foremost, asking Israel to forswear any response to an unprovoked Iraqi attack is a policy without any strategic or moral foundation, as even Arab leaders would agree. While Israeli intervention would have a short-term, inflammatory effect on Arab opinion, the rage would fade if (and it's still a big if) the U.S. removes Saddam quickly and convinces the world that its interest is to stabilize Iraq, not colonize it. The risks to Iraqi civilians - and to U.S. troops - posed by an Israeli...
