...Shortbus, which opens today in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco, and in other cities next week, is a sweet, very funny, volcanically romantic comedy-drama about relationships in post-9/11 New York City. It could slip comfily into any slot at the Sundance Film Festival, or the art-house screen at your local multiplex, except for one thing: it has lots of explicit, hard-core...
...short-term solutions to their problems, they all go to a sex cabaret called Shortbus. (Explanation of the title: back in grammar school the "normal" kids got to ride the regular-length schoolbus, while "the gifted and challenged" rode the short bus.) Among the denizens are a courtly older gent, who bears a passing resemblance to a former bachelor mayor of New York, and the cabaret's host, real-life male diva Justin Bond (aka Kiki of the Broadway duo Kiki & Herb). "It's just like the '60s," he says of the entanglement of bodies in the orgy room, "only...

Shortbus is so retro, it seems sparkling...

Mitchell said that in press interviews here, he was asked over and over, "Why sex?" I wonder: What took so long? Most people laugh and cry; most people have sex, occasionally at the same time. Sex isn't divorced from...
Here's a nice relationship comedy to warm the cooler months. Half a dozen young folks meet in a salon to watch the cabaret, talk out their troubles and, as the mood strikes them, have sex--hard core and up close. Shortbus could be called the first middle-class porno movie, but that description wouldn't be fair to this engaging study of love and lust from John Cameron Mitchell, star and author of the off-Broadway hit Hedwig and the Angry Inch. At the film's center is Sofia (Sook-Yin Lee), a sex therapist who gets no kick...
