...service this month by United and Delta airlines. Even though Douglas has 143 planes on order, it needs to turn out many more before it can make a profit on the liner. General Dynamics' Convair Division has spent $57 million to develop its long-range jet 600 and shorter-range 880. But so far it has orders for only 79 of the planes, needs triple that-or more-to turn a profit. Lockheed spent $50 million to develop its turboprop Electra, and has orders for 178. But it needs to sell 100 to 200 more to break even...
...Falcon is big enough on the inside to seat six comfortably, but considerably smaller than other cars outside. While the 109.5-in. wheelbase is only 8.5 in. shorter than the standard Ford, the body is 26.9 in. shorter and 6.8 in. narrower. There is also a big decrease in weight: the Falcon, at 2,366 Ibs., is nearly three-quarters of a ton lighter than the 3,758-Ib. average of other Fords. This in turn gives a good weight-to-power ratio for the 90-h.p., six-cylinder engine. The car has a cruising speed of better than...
...Macbeth wields a unique and ineffable power over mortal senses--and this despite the fact that the text we have is relatively corrupt and possibly incomplete (only the extremely early Comedy of Errors is shorter; and Hamlet is nearly twice as long). If I were a better critic I might perhaps be able to verbalize this power. Those who want the most keen, profound, and sometimes conflicting discussions of this play (and the other great tragedies) should turn to the writings of A.C. Bradley and G. Wilson Knight...
...sell six TWA jets on order to Pan Am to ease financial squeeze. The deal: for $40 million, Hughes Tool will turn over six new long-range Boeing 707s to Pan Am, beginning in December. Hughes will also get an option to buy Pan Am's six shorter-range 707s for $32-to-$33 million-if it can raise the cash. Hughes has a $320 million commitment to buy 63 jets for TWA. Even though TWA has finally climbed into the black, Hughes has trouble raising that much money...
Rugged Science. A steel-hulled, 142-ft. ketch (tall mainmast forward, shorter mizzenmast aft) with berths for nine scientists and a crew of 17, the Atlantis was still a very small ship to cope for months with the North Atlantic in all its ferocious moods. She had a rather feeble engine, but sails were her main reliance. Such a laboratory makes oceanography a rugged science. While the little ship rolls and pitches, the scientists work round the clock, snatching bits of food and sleep during quiet intervals in their experiments. Dress is informal. In the Tropics, oceanographers favor ragged shorts...
