Only two important shortcomings characterize this production. The first is the total excision of the first scene, which gives the play its title--doubly inexcusable since the text of the play is, except for The Comedy of Errors, the shortest in the entire canon. The second is the lack-luster playing of the king and his companions (save Richard Waring's well-spoken Antonio), of whom Loring Smith's Alonzo and O. Z. Whitehead's Sebastian are embarrassingly inept. Still, the show is a striking success for William Ball in his directorial debut for the Festival...
Father of two small children, Song is so taciturn that during the last stalemated months of the Korean war, he gave Dwight Eisenhower one of the shortest briefings in military history: "We are ready to attack the enemy-who is over there." Song is a passionate believer in civilian supremacy, argues that, "If the military take over, our democracy will go and our fight against Communism is vain." Late last week, when Acting President Huh offered to make him Defense Minister, Song flatly declined...
...proof? "My five-year-olds learn to write, count, add, subtract, divide; they learn basic geometric forms and elementary algebra; they use rulers and compasses; they learn to spell and to read 50 to 75 words. They understand the concept of zero, that a straight line is the shortest distance between two points, that all radii of the same circle are equal, that 3/6 and 4/8 are also 1/2, that 4/3 is 1⅓|, and that if 3 is divided by 2 it becomes 1½." Moreover, next year's class will begin conversational French ("Fives love to imitate...
...cigar, wearing an old slouch hat and a short blue coat without insignia. One perceptive Union officer saw him as a man with "no nonsense, no sentiment; only a plain businessman of the republic, there for the one single purpose of getting that command across the river in the shortest time possible." Grant learned by doing, and learned slowly. Leading his regiment against the Confederates for the first time, he was beset by a "cold, unreasoned sort of panic," and would have turned back except that he "lacked the moral courage" to give the order. When he discovered that...
