...triumph was short-lived. Last week a jury found Tough Boy Dio guilty on state charges of bribery and conspiracy in soliciting $30,000 from two complaisant Brooklyn electroplating firms in return for "labor peace." After one all-night session, the jurors sent word they could not reach an agreement, but General Sessions Judge John A. Mullen sent them to a hotel for rest and sober second thoughts. The guilty verdict opens Dio to a maximum sentence of two years in prison and a fine...
...Tennessee, the best known, most respected jurist is a short (5 ft. 5½ in.), balding judge named Robert Love Taylor. A lifelong Democrat in Republican East Tennessee. Little Bob Taylor comes from a long line of big men: his great-grandfather Nathaniel G. Taylor fought the British at New Orleans with Andrew Jackson; his Republican father Alfred was governor of Tennessee (1921-23); his namesake uncle, a Democrat, was a U.S. Senator (1907-12) as well as governor (1887-91; 1897-99)-in fact, the Taylor brothers ran against each other in 1886 for governor. No politician, Little...
...neighbors are each other's best customers, but it is a chronic Canadian complaint that Canada gets the short end of the bargain. By the trainload and shipload, Canadian newsprint, nickel, aluminum feed the U.S. economy. The Consolidated Denison mine in Blind River, Ont. contains twice as much uranium as all the known U.S. reserves, and its entire output through 1961 is earmarked for the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission. In turn, the U.S. ships industrial machinery, automobiles and consumer goods to the north, and Canada's trade deficit with the U.S. last year...
There was no training table in the dingy dressing room, and so the aging (30), beaten fighter had to lie across three wooden folding chairs. He had a bloodstained towel around his head, and he pressed an ice bag against a puffing eye. Except for a short-lived moment four years ago when some thought he had the stuff to go somewhere, Heavyweight Bob Baker, a huge, long-muscled young man from Pittsburgh, had been nothing but a ham-and-egg fighter. Last week, whipped by flashy Eddie Machen, 25, Baker realized that after 59 pro bouts, his pantry...
Special credit is due Arthur Waldstein as the Duke of Plaza-Toro and to his whole entourage, including John Bernard as his attendant, Alison Keith as the pompous Duchess, and Marjory Harper as the daughter, later Queen of Barataria. Waldstein is nothing short of hilarious as the somewhat down-at-the-heels Duke. Alison Keith, who is well-known to Cambridge audiences, is an excellent actress who possesses a fine comic opera voice. John Bernard has an extremely able voice and he appeared quite natural in his role as drummer-boy, later King of Barataria. As his beloved, Marjory Harper...
