...before any perfect peace set in, the rebels were determined to allow themselves a wave of revenge against the conquered foe. Last week some 28 lesser Batista officials, left behind when the top dogs fled, were convicted in kangaroo courts and shot; another nine were executed without benefit of trial at all. Typical victims: Santiago's Maritime Police Chief Alejandro Garcia Olayón, Santa Clara's Police Chief Cornelio Rojas (see cuts). After one execution drew a crowd of 3,000, the rebels ruled that spectators would henceforth be barred-but allowed to inspect the bodies afterward...

Booster Now. Other symposium speakers agreed that the most urgent next step in the anti-polio war is to complete three-shot protection for 50 million Americans under 40 who still have had no vaccine or only an odd shot. This will mean wiping out pockets of epidemic potential, now found mainly in low-living-standard areas, such as the Detroit slums that bred 1958's deadliest outbreak. After the deluge, the varsity fought back gamely but futilely, for the height, speed, and finesse of the visitors were clearly too much for the Crimson. At 14:-45, the varsity pulled within eight points on a Donohue push shot, but Dartmouth went into a semi-freeze, working the ball around the outside until someone got clear for a lay-up shot. In the last five minutes, in fact, the Indians outscored the varsity, 15 to 5, despite a full-court press...

...drives was, generally speaking, the superior speed of the Soviet wings. In their playing pattern, one of the wings would speed down ice with the puck, drawing the Crimson players with him into a corner. Then the pass would go out to one of the points for a long shot on Pratt, and after the rebound, either from Pratt of off the boards, the Russians would play in front of the cage for the decisive shot, passing out to the point if the puck floated into a corner again...
