Over the weekend, Sharif's supporters had planned welcome-back parties even as they steeled for a showdown with security forces. Pundits had predicted mayhem in the streets. Many, including those closest to Sharif, expected the authorities to arrest him upon arrival on recently reopened charges of money laundering and corruption - charges his party leaders call "trumped-up and patently false." Tossing him in jail upon his arrival would not have been a popular move, but it would have been legal. Few thought Musharraf would be willing to risk the unfettered return of a once-loathed leader who has come...

...Senate has approved Bush's nominees for district-court judgeships at a clip that equals previous confirmation rates. Not so his nominees for the U.S. circuit court, only three of whom have been confirmed in 2007. In the spring, in an episode recalling the 2005 "nuclear option" showdown that required a brokered deal on judicial nominees, a tense fight broke out over Judge Leslie Southwick, Bush's pick for the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. Bush isn't yet ready to blame anyone else. Instead, he has been waiting for months for this showdown with his war critics and now intends to prevail. He told journalist Robert Draper, author of the new book Dead Certain, that he was counting on Congress to continue a sustained military presence in Iraq through this year and into the presidency of whoever succeeds him. As early...

High School Musical 2's audience already knows how this movie ends. But they'll watch and re-watch because it has such an unembarrassed good time getting there. Where the original had a basketball dance number, the sequel has I Don't Dance, a baseball/hoofing showdown between Sharpay's fey brother Ryan (Lucas Grabeel) and athlete Chad (Corbin Bleu). (The double entendres--"I'll show you how I swing!"--re unavoidable, if unintentional.) The whole production is as blindingly art-directed as a sixth-grader's backpack--Lava Springs looks as if it's made out of chunks...
