Though it seemed hardly necessary, a new organization called the Let's Chew More Gum Association opened offices this month in Tokyo. The opening, attended by politicians, baseball stars and showfolk, went as smoothly as a cathedral service-which, in a way, it was. Highlight of the première was a special prayer intoned by a Shinto priest standing before a kind of altar to gamu. Excerpts...

...best friends ("Ya crumb-bum!") and coldly rejects sycophants ("How should I remember ya when I only seen ya oncet?"). Everybody calls him Toots, a name that has stuck since childhood when he was-incredible as it may seem-a pretty boy. His pals are sportsmen, athletes, politicians, showfolk, journalists and has-beens; in short, Toots Shor is a Runyonesque character too true to be fictional...

Busy as a Kennedy, he appeared nightly on local television over station KHJ (the call letters, he said, stand for "Kennedy Hates Johnson"), nibbled petits fours and strawberries while matching attitudes with Senators, Governors, showfolk and intellectuals, including a bewildered Max Lerner. Sahl also did two shows a night at the Crescendo on Sunset Strip and managed to write at least one newspaper column each day, mainly for Hearst. First and still the best of the New Comedians whose specialty is topical humor, Mort Sahl...

...redecorated, just for the evening, to provide proper dash and elegance for a ball whose theme will be 18th century French. Occasion: the coming-out of their daughter, Debutante Charlotte Ford, 18. The guest roster is a Who's-Really-Who of U.S. business, upper-crust society and showfolk, with a suitable seasoning of European nobility...
