Bank Debits (withdrawals from individual checking accounts in 274 cities). With the advent of Depression II, bank debits slumped at once as people tightened their purse strings. The total touched bottom in February. Subsequent figures, charted with seasonal allowances, show that since early March public buying has held at a fairly even pace. Last week's bank debits were $6,850,000, 18% under a year ago but the same as the previous week. Significance: though production of goods is still dropping, buying has apparently steadied-an optimistic sign...

...last week, though the tide was still indicated as ebbing (i.e., primary movement tending downward), a 7-point rise in the industrial average since May 31 encouraged a bullish hope that ripples might top previous crests of 121 for the industrials, 23.5 for the rails, thus show the current wave to be coming in. This week's Rhea letter said that every upward zig-zag step, if confirmed by both averages, would be bullish, but a downward zigzag prior to penetration of 121 and 23.5 would mean danger...

Because the 16 stories in Southways show less of Erskine Caldwell's customary satanic humor and forthright sexual symbolism, and because a number of them have appeared in such cautious magazines as the Atlantic Monthly, Harper's Bazaar, Cosmopolitan, some readers may conclude that Caldwell is mellowing into a merely successful writer. Examined more closely, they warrant another guess. More skilful, briefer than Caldwell's last collection, Kneel to the Rising Sun (1935), they suggest that Caldwell is feeling his way toward a less stylized, less repetitious, more complex kind of writing...
