In Chicago the show seemed good but raw, mingled surefire thrills with extravaganza that fell flat. Flattest of all fell McCoy's cherished pageantry stuff. ...critics who had hidden a smile at Balletmistress Galli's efforts soon began to think that Balanchine was not much better. Although he staged successful ballets in many a Broadway show (On Your Toes, Babes in Arms), Choreographer Balanchine never quite got the spirit of upholstered elegance appropriate to Aïda, or the abandon appropriate to the Bacchanale scene in Tannhäuser. And as pirouetting Bacchanalians, the youthful American Ballet was discouragingly apt to resemble a flock of plucked sparrows. Kindest commentators agreed it was nice, but not quite right...
...Pearls of the Crown (Serge Sandberg) behaves oddly by: 1) speaking in three languages, 2) popping up in unexpected places all over the face of the world, and 3) flitting back & forth over the last four centuries with the fervor of a flea at a dog show. More upstart than experiment, Pearls of the Crown is a capricious use of cinema's ample elbow room for the somersaulting imagination and talents of 53-year-old French Stagecrafter Sacha Guitry, who wrote its story, directed it and played four of its leading parts...
Unlike most investment houses, the Wall Street brokerage firm of Carl M. Loeb, Rhoades & Co.. dealing largely in securities and commodities, last week chose to be optimistic. Reckoning that inventories are now notably depleted and that the slump has been accentuated by the advancing of the Automobile Show from January to November, it noted in a memorandum to customers "that business has actually been doing better during the past two or three months than is generally believed and that there may be some upturn in industrial activity during the ensuing months...
