...movie when, once again, a very random five minutes reveal several disturbing little aspects of the past of our hero, Dr. Mumford. It's a welcome surprise--in doing so, Kasdan finally provides the film with some conflict and direction. (At the same time, these five minutes also show that the overly drawn-out first half of the movie could have been condensed into ten minutes...
...real show-stealer was the Kennedys (Pete Kennedy and his wife Maura Boudreau), who had the final performance on the Showcase Stage. So Pete had bad hair--still, when he lifted up his old guitar to thump, tweak and coax out crowd-rousing guitar solos that flew from Spanish-style romances to jazzy Broadway show tunes, you forgot all about it. The captivating backgrounds of their songs were impressive as well: they wove classics like Faure's "Pavane" and Bach's Jesu, "Joy of Man's Desiring" into songs inspired by remote sources such as Greek myth...
...were not the only workers here. Forget the Dixie Chicks as a symbol of kick-ass country or folk. Squeezing into the sappily labeled side show, "Small Victory: Songs of Faith and Redemption," I discovered a batch of female folk artists who, even in their sometimes cliched anguish over lost love, came out as women who knew the value and pain of an honest day's labor. All too ready to dismiss this as another whine-fest on my way in, I instead was caught up with the crowd in wildly applauding the willowy Dee Carstensen strumming her harp siren...
...most of us was our sudden submersion in the real world. By using this loaded term, I am not referring to the current MTV hit, although I am not sure that torrid romances and too much alcohol caused summertime regret. Nor am I alluding to the famous Cosby show episode where Theo must face taxes, jobs and rent, all the responsibilities of the "real world," although I am sure many of us got a big kick out of playing grown up: renting an apartment, hosting dinner parties and bringing in the big bucks...
...Regis Philbin's "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" started off slowly this summer but quickly built steam--and within weeks was pummeling its way to the top of the Nielsen's ratings. I, as always, was skeptical, but this was some seriously addictive television. Finally a game show that didn't reward you with a new dinette set or a cheesy trip to Las Palmas. This was a diabolically simple challenge (and a fair one at that)--a tortuous series of questions that required a cool blend of skill, strategy and luck. And best of all, we could play...
