...conversation follows" tagline (that fascinating scene, incidentally, is nowhere to be found in the actual film). Artisan Entertainment, recognizing the success that the Blair Witch advertising brought them, developed a devilish little pattern in their marketing strategy. First, they design an ultra-cool web page. Then, they show their enigmatic preview to those same people who were sucked in by Blair Witch hype. Finally, they sit back and watch the web geeks do the work, generating more buzz and rumor than substance...
...seduce this mass of purchasing power. Few are guiltier of such shameless snakecharming than 104.1 WBCN, the "Rock Revolution", who sponsored the College Rave '99 at the BankBoston Pavilion on Sunday. With a college ID and ten dollars, you could be subjected to relentless banners and a loosely amalgamated show featuring four bands that share only the common threads of BCN air time and coincidentally synchronized Boston tour dates...
Buckcherry, who opened the show, was utterly horrible. I'm normally inclined to be more verbose, but I've never been so disappointed before. The band played a strong and entertaining set at Woodstock '99, but something went very wrong for College Rave. When Todd was not mumbling, he often sang way off key, and the guitar, bass and drums were rarely in time with one another. The crowd only responded mildly to the radio hits "Lit-Up" and "For the Movies" and spent...
...first, but after an hour died down to an exhausted gasp. SA Martinez and Nick Hexum bounced around the stage in a vain attempt at reviving the energy, but finally relinquished to the bored faces by playing their hits--including "Down"--and exiting the building. The only time the show truly got "all mixed up" was afterwards during my battle with the escaping throngs for a seat on the shuttle back to South Station...
...guns, they enter the designated bunker, Gates holding the cease-fire agreement in front of him like a search warrant, repeating, "In the name of President Bush, and under the terms of the cease fire-agreement, let us through. We are here for your protection and safety." The Iraqis show no fear or hostility, and surround them with pleas for food, medicine and help. This reception is not what they expect, and this scene of the movie, shot with grainy, color-saturated ektachrome film, presents their situation as almost surreal. The walls are painted with vast smiling portraits of Saddam...
