...shrewd to rely totally on Jimmy Carter's coattails, Democrat James Sasser decided to run hard against incumbent Bill Brock and win their Senate race largely on his own. The genial Sasser tormented his rich opponent for refusing to make a full disclosure of his finances, for paying only $2,000 in federal taxes on his 1975 income of $51,000, and for refusing to make his 1974 tax return public. Starting out 30 points behind in the polls, Sasser scored a stunning upset over a highly regarded conservative who had hopes for the 1980 Republican presidential nomination...
...Democratic majority in Congress is somewhat diminished, he will have a hard time because the Democrats will have fresh and tougher leadership on the Hill. The Speaker of the House will no longer be the amiable Carl Albert but Massachusetts' Thomas ("Tip") O'Neill, 63, a shrewd liberal who will more aggressively challenge the White House. The theater owners devoted the rest of the week mainly to alternating spasms of anger and depression. Hollywood, they say, is not giving them anywhere near the number of films they would like to have; most of those that do come down the pipes continue straight on down the tubes...
Witch-Hunters. Allen plays a politically innocent but street-shrewd cashier in a bar and grill, whose old high school friend (Michael Murphy) is a blacklisted TV writer suddenly in need of someone to sign his scripts for him, cash his checks and show up at rehearsals pretending he wrote the thing. The friend is gifted, the network execs are pleased, and Allen (who takes a percentage for his services) soon finds himself prospering and enjoying his demi-celebrity. But, of course, a tweed jacket and a book-lined pad do not an author make. The Front's best...
