People with ultra-audiometric hearing, says Berlin, are usually born with full-range hearing, but become deaf in the lower registers after suffering a high fever, virus or meningitis in childhood. Some have an extended upper auditory range and can hear dog whistles or the shrill hiss of a department-store electronic security system. Their problem, as in Kam's case, generally goes undetected because of inadequate testing. Most testing devices do not produce sounds above a certain frequency, Berlin says, "and it is precisely at this cutoff that ultra-audiometric patients begin hearing." Worse still, ultra-audio-metrics...
...Wisconsin's Dreyfus said, "The only water that leaves the Great Lakes basin should be in cans, mixed with hops, barley and malt." But while such a political position may play well in Milwaukee, it raises a far more serious question in what could become an increasingly shrill national debate: Should any single state, or group of states, be able to put a lock on what could be regarded as a national resource? The new water sheiks of the Midwest would probably answer with a resounding yes, but the rest of the country may take another view. -By Frederic...
...other book, Jeffrey Lant's collection of reminiscences, spans "distinguished graduates" form 1917 (Buckminster Fuller) to 1981 John H. Adler. Since I am neither distinguished nor-till tomorrow-a graduate, my criticism will likely sound shrill, still and all, a good number of these stones might better have been recounted over drinks at the Harvest during twenty-fifth reunions. As a general rule, the older grads are more interesting, if much less recognizable. And in one short piece, a tribute to Perry Miler, Robert Coles '50 succeeds better then the rest in being both eloquent and moving...
Undeterred by the show of force, Solidarity members and supporters put up a huge poster of their leader, Lech Walesa, who remains interned. When banners bearing the suspended union's familiar SOLIDARNOSC logo were unfurled, the crowd's cheers were interrupted by the shrill sound of police loudspeakers issuing orders to disperse. Then the militiamen charged, beating demonstrators and bystanders indiscriminately. When the protesters responded with shouts of "Gestapo!" the militia began firing flares and tear-gas canisters into the crowd. High-powered water cannons drove some demonstrators into side streets. Others, less fortunate, were knocked down...
...destructive prejudices that I have seen again and again among men his age. It has probably constituted the Harvard faculty's most powerful--because unanswerable--defense against what it perceives as the invasion of hordes of Amazonian scholars, armed with Ph.D.'s (and Lord knows who gave them those), shrill voices, and--worst of all--the gall (shall we say) to call a mild-mannered male professor in his own home during family time...
