...with spurts of dissonance that reflect the brutal realities apparent in much of the music. Listening further, though, you'll realize the same formula is repeated in every song--a few bars of the band, and within seconds, a mellow, whiny voice that enters and builds up to a shrill, screaming climax before dipping back into eerie sounds. The repetition made me wonder if I had listened to all eleven songs, or the same song again and again. Despite these flaws, the sounds of Swimmer are, strangely enough, quite soothing. ...beats, funk threads, classical samples, bossa nova riffs and exotica, running on smooth easy-listening gas. Maki Nomiya and Yasuharu Konishi blend and blush an all-Japanese soundtrack to the imaginary lifestyle of the international playboy/girl set. "Rolls Royce" is experimentally clever but strung on an annoying shrill that detracts from adorable bubbletunes like "La Dpression," "Playboy Playgirl" and "A New Song." ...eerily like a grown-up Ralphie from "A Christmas Story," won our sympathy as the simpleton with reservations about being Veep ("what if my mother found out?"). Joe Nuccio '00 commanded a range of priceless facial expressions as Fulton, the head party man. Meara McIntyre was sweet and never shrill as Mary Turner, the gal who made "Corn muffins or justice?" into a more-than-rhetorical question. It is fitting that, as the leads, McIntyre and Cooper had the best voices...

...tends to meander. Now it's Beth's story, now Vincent's, now Sam's. It has little interest in villainy: the backstory of the kidnapping takes just moments. But in a time when there are few serious family dramas--and when those few, like Stepmom, play it shrill and sticky--the old limitations can look like cardinal virtues...
