...heart of the verdant Nile delta. "This is my Georgia," exclaimed the Egyptian leader, pointing to the landscape of thatched-roof mud houses and farmers tilling with ox-drawn wooden plows. The antique diesel locomotive, decorated with flowers and palms, was greeted along the way by the shrill sound of reed instruments and the rhythmic clapping of hands. Dangling from trees and lampposts, clustered on roofs and balconies, and crowding close to the rails, tens of thousands of robed farmers, workers and students shouted their greetings. ...careers in the world's major opera houses, but this recording shows them in a very bad light. Rita Hunter's light-voiced Brunnhilde and Alberto Remedios' Siegfried are effective in the more lyrical passages, but neither really withstands the strain of these most taxing of roles. So upset is the Administration that it may take its case to the public by releasing documents refuting Israel's contentions...

...only dignity in the film comes from Ellen Burstyn, who skillfully recreates her stage role. Playing the part originated by Charles Grodin, Alda gives a surprisingly weak performance: his usual warmth is vitiated by too many shrill farcical tantrums. Still, it's hard to blame an actor for this debacle. The only way to win playing Same Time, Next Year is to refuse to play...
