Doors from Cairo. The museum has four parts. Already 50,000 visitors have tunneled through the white-domed Shrine of the Book (TIME, April 30). Near by are five acres of contoured gardens, designed by Isamu Noguchi, containing sculptures given by Showman Billy Rose. Bombproof Pits for Isaiah. Almost all the funds that built the museum came from the New World. The $800,000 Shrine of the Book was bankrolled by the Gottesman Foundation, named for the late Pulp-and-Paper Tycoon Samuel Gottesman. The U.S. Government has contributed $830,000 and the Bronfman museum was a $2,000,000 birthday gift from the children of the 70-year-old Canadian liquor magnate. Billy Rose estimates that his garden cost $1,600,000. But no one seems to mind a bit that this whole art complex lies within gunshot of the barbed-wire border...

...mosaics represent Homeric scenes, Theseus raping Helen, warlike Amazons and two centaurs, one of them curiously a woman. But the most intriguing discovery to date is a large circular structure built about 2,300 years ago. Perhaps a shrine, it is 100 ft. in diameter and is surrounded by three smaller rotundas, each 16 ft. in diameter. No other circular complex of this style has been found anywhere in Greece...

Necessary Mystery. When the U.S. team of architects, M.I.T.-trained Armand Bartos and Viennese-born Frederick Kiesler were approached by the Israeli government and asked to build a shrine for the scrolls, they knew that a boxlike building could fulfill the function. But they were struck by the historic coincidence in 1947 of the discovery of the 2,000-year-old scrolls in the Essene-sect caves with the re-emergence of the state of Israel.
