...predecessors; Tokyo has said only that it "understands" the Bush Administration's plans for an antiballistic missile shield and has hinted it might develop its own missile defense. Koizumi, who enjoys enormous popular support, has rattled neighbors by displaying a nationalistic streak. He plans to visit a controversial shrine where convicted war criminals are memorialized, and he has refused to prohibit the publication of textbooks that whitewash Japan's war aggression. Koizumi favors rejiggering the American-inspired constitution, which renounces the use of war. In the past, the merest suggestion of rearming has been off limits, though the Japanese armed...

...military build-up because that would enable the U.S. to shift some of its hardware and staff elsewhere. The rest of Asia, particularly China, would react differently. Koizumi has already perturbed neighbors by revealing a conservative nationalist streak. He has said he'll visit the controversial Yasukuni Shrine, a war memorial where veterans, including some convicted war criminals, are entombed. Linguist-hero accompanies suspicious expedition to legendary hidden shrine; hero kills rogue male villain, vindicates visionary dead male ancestor. (Can't an action hero ever have a mother fixation?) Atlantis adroitly mixes 2-D and 3-D animation but is short on emotional heft and depth. ...continuing cultural resonance?it's fair to wonder how much longer its shadow will shape our world. Already, the grip is loosening. Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi seems more prepared than any of his recent predecessors to assert Japan's national interests; if, as planned, he visits the Yasukuni shrine, a memorial to Japanese war dead, he would be the first Premier to do so in an official capacity. Gerhard SchrOder's government is explicitly committed to the idea that Germany can and should be a "normal" country, not one whose every move is dictated by war guilt. German pilots...
