Staying in first place this year won't be easy. The Commerce Department said last week that exports in January fell for the third month in a row. While the trade deficit for the month did shrink to $5.77 billion from $6 billion in December, that was largely because of fewer imports. To no one's surprise, the biggest trade imbalance in January was with Japan.
