...Kind oi Shroud. In his final plea, Sinyavsky said: "It is always the same hair-raising quotations from the indictment, repeated dozens of times and mounting up to create a monstrous atmosphere that no longer bears any relation to reality. It creates a kind of shroud, a peculiar kind of electrified atmosphere in which the boundary between the real and the grotesque becomes blurred, rather as in the works of Arzhak and Tertz. In general, a real 'Public Murder Day'-but only with two actors: Daniel and myself...

These older, reckles lyrics excited me because their contagion was evident; ears attuned to them gained appetites for "poeticism" and a lot of earnest, though not always men leapt up to supply them. Paul Simon (Garfunkel's partner) gives us lines freshly fallen silent shroud of snow," important, he gives us his own self-image: "A poet with a one-man band." "I have my bo--oks/And my po--e--try to protect me, he says. Mick Jagger write a 7-stress line Off My Cloud" and resuscitates the blues poetry of Sam Cooke, Otis Red Dog Herskovitz. The Lovin...

Umbilical Dynamics. Plagued by abortive launchings, prevented from docking with the Augmented Target Docking Adapter (ATDA) because its protective shroud had not shaken loose, the two astronauts were exhausted by three difficult but largely successful rendezvous attempts (TIME, June 10). Even so, the Gemini 9 crew hoped to salvage most of the mission by successfully completing their last and most dramatic assignment: Astronaut Cernan's scheduled 21-hour walk in space. "Hallelujah!" shouted Cernan as he opened his hatch and emerged into space on schedule...

...Gemini window with a hand-held Hasselblad 70-mm. camera showed the rendezvous with the target satellite that Stafford had dubbed the "angry alligator." There was such clarity of detail that NASA experts used the pictures to confirm the reason why the ATDA had failed to shed its heat shroud. The ATDA ground crew had not connected four lanyards that would have assured proper jettisoning. Certain that the lanyards were merely leads for ground-test instruments, the crew had taped them uselessly to the side of the shroud...

Costly Rendezvous. Eager to proceed with the planned docking of Gemini and ATDA, Stafford quickly suggested a solution: to nudge the obstructing shroud out of the way by flying up and hitting it gently with Gemini's docking bar. Safety-conscious controllers in Houston vetoed the scheme, instead electronically commanded ATDA's movable docking collar to extend and contract, in a vain try to shake the shroud loose. Another idea was to allow Astronaut Cernan to pry or cut the shroud loose during his scheduled space walk; this was also rejected for fear that the sharp edges might...
