...such a thing before. She became so interested that her older friend wrote out all these stories for her, stories about white queens, and mad hatters and two odd little chumps called Tweedledee and Tweedledum who were in continual fisticuffs over a rattle. People grew suddenly incredibly tall or shrunk away until they prit near weren't there at all. It was all most confusing and bewildering, but such great fun. There is something, quite delightful about the fearful rage of a white knight and the incomprehensible conversation of a sleepy doormouse...
...steady expansion in world trade, not merely in volume but in value, in which the annuities payable by Germany would become a factor of diminishing importance. In fact, the opposite has been the case. Since the Young Plan came into effect, not only has the trade of the world shrunk in volume but the very exceptional fall in gold prices that has occurred in the last two years has itself added greatly to the real burden, not only of German annuities but of all payments fixed in gold...
...reduction in steel dividends is apt to have a more direct effect on purchases, although this too would be small. Attorney Thomas Lincoln Chadbourne, director of the bank and its counsel, called all the ugly rumors lies, spoke of their "utter baselessness, sheer malignancy." He said Chatham Phenix would prosecute Mr. O'Connell to ''the very limit of the law," was busy seeking...
Scarcity of waterfowl has been taken for granted this season. However, the real effect of drought has been questioned. Ducks have been reported more plentiful than ever in Manitoba, presumably attracted from the desiccated swamps and waterways of Saskatchewan and Alberta. Quebec has had ample rainfall (as has the entire Atlantic Coast) this summer. Quebec birds seem normal in numbers and health. In his next issue Editor Raymond Prunty Holland of Field & Stream will remark...
