Died. Friedrich August III, 66, onetime gay king of Saxony; of heart disease; in his castle, Sibyllenort, near Breslau, Silesia. Unconventional, Catholic, he was popular with his Protestant subjects. While he was crown prince, his wife, onetime Archduchess of Austria, eloped with the French tutor of his royal children. When the German Republic was proclaimed in 1918, he was asked by telephone whether he would abdicate willingly. Said he: "Oh, well, I suppose I'd better."
