...nice when things go smoothly on a movie set-when temperament doesn't rise up and take over. Note the scene in Italy, for instance, where Marcello Mastroianni, 43, and Faye Dunaway, 27, are filming A Place for Lovers for Vittorio De Sica. She helps him with his English. He helps her with Italian slang. They both help each other with their diets. They trade compliments: he likes her eyebrows, she likes making movies in his country. And there haven't even been any of those snippy romance-is-in-the-air rumors buzzing around. Says Faye...
...WEDNESDAY NIGHT MOVIE (ABC, 9-11 p.m.).* It Started in Naples. The tiny Mediterranean island of Capri is background for this 1960 romantic comedy, with Sophia Loren at her most briosa, Vittorio De Sica at his most simpatico, and Clark Gable at his usual most...

Shirley is no Sophia, although even Loren would have had trouble with these amateurish anecdotes...
...with weak punch lines. Part of the fault is MacLaine's. Despite heavy help from the makeup and wardrobe departments, she seldom departs from her customary screen self, and all seven women suffer from an unflatter ing family resemblance. Most of the blame, however, must fall on De Sica, who has wasted such talented actors as Arkin, Sellers, Michael Caine, Philippe Noiret and Vittorio Gassman in a ponderously directed, flaccid work. Better than anyone else, he should know that a tour de farce is like a striptease: there is no point in the performance if the material does...
