Bread, Love and Dreams was a pleasant little comedy that got its fireworks from the incendiary performance of Gina Lollobrigida as she scattered sex and devastation through the streets of an Abruzzi village, and in the manly breasts of Policeman Vittorio De Sica and Roberto Risso. Frisky assembles all of the old cast and most of the old plot for another run-through. But this time the razor edge of comedy has dulled: Gina's rowdiness is strident, De Sica's amorous posturings predictable, Risso's Li'l Abnerisms boring...
...partly responsible; they have played as directed. Charles Boyer is a general who better resembles a priest. His deliberateness makes him dispirited in a part which calls for shrewdness. Seeing his wife off on a train, his rapt expression conveys no idea of what he is thinking. Vittorio De Sica as the Countess' admirer, misses the irony of his position. Only the Countess, Danielle Darricux, seems to have understood her role, but even she fails to exploit it fully...

...this point a new police chief (Vittorio De Sica) comes to town. A middle-aged bachelor with a broad outlook, he makes a play for Gina, soon oversteps himself and falls in the river. That same afternoon, when Gina gets in a street fight. Chief De Sica takes his chance to clap her in the clink. But when he goes to her cell in the dead of night, Gina touchingly tells him that she is worried about her donkey. The police chief goes ruefully off to give the brute some hay. Gina of course gets the man she wants...
