In his box halfway up the ring's shady side, an erect, piercing-eyed old man in a broad-brimmed black hat glared about him. The wind was too strong for good bullfighting, he groused; the sun too bright. In their brilliantly colored capotes de paseo (parade capes), the toreros marched into the ring. "No elegance!" the old man harrumphed...

...Microgroove records, with their clearer tone and 22½-minute playing time on each side, represented a much needed technical advance. But they also cut into other record sales by carrying an entire symphony on one 12-inch record for $4.85 v. $8.50 for a six-record RCA Victor album. And L.P. records scared phonograph buyers off; they didn't want to buy phonographs that turned at the old speed, especially when rumors got around of the new Victor record...

Everything else to one side, talk of hard times at the Christmas season would offend Hollywood's sense of dramatic values. Along Hollywood Boulevard, the street lamps are covered with those decorations which are not real trees, or even slavish representations of real trees, but interesting, frankly synthetic designs frosted in colored lights. And along Wilshire and Sunset the roadside stands are gay with little trees sprayed in pale blue, white, pink and lavender. At this time, Hollywood would like everyone, particularly itself, to wear a cheerful face...
