Some of the productions in the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company's current Boston repertoire have been on the disappointing side for this reviewer. A flaw or two in the casting have been noticeable, and perhaps some of the romantic glow assumed by the Gilbert and Sullivan operas during the lean years tended to disappear when they were seen again. Gilbert and Sullivan, despite the somewhat mystical reputation which time has given them, were no more consistent than any creative personalities, and there are bare spets and distinctly less interesting operas among their work...
...faces that keep turning up on the newsstand from month to month but one of our Massachusetts Avenue operators happened upon an item just the other day that deserves to be noised about. The issue in question runs to 52 pages, with covers, and up and down the left side of the front cover is a string of letters from which we deciphered "Harvard" and "Lampoon" without too much trouble. We were a little perplexed by all this until we turned to page three and saw there an ad for Steuben Glass. This finding may not mean much...

Sometimes a road may be quite peaceful; the next moment it may be swept with gunfire. Even with Arab, Jewish and British press cards, it is a problem to get people on the spot to accept you. In the Arab quarter of the old city, for example, unless you have an armed escort from the Arabs' national headquarters, you might be fired on, attacked by a crowd as a Jewish spy, or arrested...
Many a Bostonian who has no love for Dumaine was on his side in the fight. They felt that the New York interests (insurance) which had dominated the railroad had given Boston the short end of :he New Haven's business. Lately, South Shore commuters and Cape Codders have been fighting mad over the New Haven's plan to stop passenger service on its subsidiary, the Old Colony Railroad, the only railroad to the Cape. Shrewd Frederic Dumaine said that if he won the New Haven he would try to keep the Old Colony running...
...Sainted Sisters (Paramount) are daintily tough Veronica Lake and delicious Joan Caulfield. In flight from the New York police (circa 1895), they stop off for a con girls' holiday in a little town in Maine. They hole up with Barry Fitzgerald, the solidest down-Easter this side of Galway, and get busy fleecing the yokels...
