Many of the great chairs of the era were designed for cafes, only natural in an urban subculture of coffeehouse-and-cabaret cosmopolites. Adolf Loos' lithe, sensual sidechair for his Cafe Museum (1899) makes its Thonet bentwood forebears look dowdy by comparison.
