...embarrassment that it caused the U.S., the Moscow sideshow was not unexpected. Last July, when Martin and Mitchell did not come back from a sum mer vacation, NSA men broke into Mitchell's home in Laurel, Md. They found the place a shambles, and they were par ticularly intrigued by a set of safe-deposit keys. Maryland State Police got a court order to open Mitchell's safe-deposit box in the State Bank of Laurel, and there, indeed, was the typewritten defection statement...
...majorities in the Senate and in the House (which reassembles a week later), planned to introduce their platform welfare promises one by one. If the President vetoed the bills, the Democrats would cry that Republicans placed more emphasis on budget balancing than on public needs. As a kind of sideshow to this main act, two Northern Republicans vowed to submit the Democratic civil-rights plank as a bill, hoping to watch Southern Democrats squirm...
This was Morton Lyon Sahl. delegate from everywhere and nowhere, just about the only un-TelePrompTed speaker in town, and a sideshow considerably brighter than the main attraction. Amendments and proposals that would kill or maim the bill popped up and down like ducks at a sideshow shooting gallery. The Congressman whose proposal did the most harm was New York Democrat Adam Clayton Powell Jr., political boss of Harlem. He insisted on attaching the old familiar "Powell Amendment," a rider that would withhold federal funds from segregated schools. Powell occasionally manages to tack on his nuisance amendment, sometimes killing...
...control. On Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev's visit to the U.S. last September, some 300 correspondents and cameramen, eagerly vying for the same story, several times turned the tour into a journalistic wreck (TIME, Oct. 5). Jim Hagerty was determined that there would be no such sideshow on Ike's trip. By the time he shepherded the traveling press corps and their gear aboard three buses outside the White House gate last week, Hagerty had laid out a set of battle orders that would have won any good general's enthusiastic acclaim...
