Emblazoned with the star of David, U.S.-supplied F-15s streaked low over the Mediterranean last week, protecting other Israeli planes on a bombing run of suspected Palestinian positions near Sidon and Damour in southern Lebanon. When the Israelis spotted eight Syrian MiG-21s flying toward them in close formation, the F-15 pilots fired their missiles. In the brief but fiery battle, which was joined by Israeli Kfir jets, at least six of the Syrian jets plummeted to earth. The Israelis returned to their home bases unscathed...
...Only five days before the scheduled withdrawal of Israeli troops from southern Lebanon, 150 Israeli commandos, using boats and helicopters, last week hit a Palestinian camp at Aaqbiye, six miles south of Sidon. The Israelis claimed that the attack was aimed at a terrorist training camp; sources in Lebanon suspected that the raid was retaliation for the recent bombing of a bus in Jerusalem, in which six people were killed. Death toll in the attack: five Palestinian soldiers, at least six Lebanese civilians, and two Israelis...
...week's end the Israelis remained in southern Lebanon. Best estimates were that the Israeli forces consisted of a battalion of infantry, supported by artillery and armor. They were also protected by heavy air cover and a flotilla of patrol boats off the Lebanese ports of Tyre and Sidon to cut off supplies for the Palestinians. Under protection of Israeli artillery, Defense Minister Ezer Weizman even toured the area in an unmarked automobile, accompanied by Chief of Staff Mordecai Gur and Major General Yanush Ben-Gal, commander of Israel's northern sector...

The Syrians are now in no position to force a confrontation with Israel; they are too involved in Lebanon. Syrian units have moved no nearer the border than Zahrani, 30 miles to the north, near Sidon, to protect the oil refinery there, which has now resumed operation. Last week, Damascus quietly renewed the Golan Heights peace agreement with Israel for another six months...
TIME has also learned that the Israelis have provided the Christian Lebanese with a small navy, whose mission is to intercept ships heading for the remaining Moslem-held port of Sidon. The fleet consists of five gunboats of the Israeli navy Dabur class and three of the smaller Yatush class. According to one Israeli who helped train 100 Lebanese sailors to man them, the boats represent "the first 'Christian' navy in the Mediterranean since the Crusades...
