Having good friends in high places did not hurt Connally. Largely because of his close relationship with L.B.J., he was hired in 1952 by Multimillionaire Oilman Sid Richardson. Connally, as chief administrator and lobbyist for Richardson, was primarily concerned with guarding against any Government effort to reduce the depletion allowance, which then allowed a 27.5% tax deduction on the income of oil and gas producers.
