Most professional dietitians favor a program of gradual, moderate changes in eating habits, often recommending "grazing," or eating many small meals throughout the day. It can take a year "to change people's ways of thinking and behaving in regard to eating," says Sherry Siegel, founder of a Chicago weight-consulting firm. There are also those who proffer unorthodox advice, like Oz Garcia, a successful, self-taught New York City nutritionist who decides what clients should eat after he has analyzed their hair. "I was a walking penny," says Amy Greene, 54, a makeup consultant at the chic Henri Bendel...
...else. That is the mission of a coterie of corporate-identity consultants who create names for new companies and products. Anspach Grossman Portugal, a New York City consulting firm, oversaw Libbey-Owens-Ford's metamorphosis into Trinova, and suggested Consolidated Foods adopt the tastier name of Sara Lee Corp. Siegel & Gale, another New York company, persuaded United States Steel to transform itself into USX. San Francisco-based NameLab christened Nissan's Sentra car and Honda's luxury Acura model...
Hiring a consultant, though, is no guarantee that a new company name will be either unique or appropriate. Siegel & Gale gave U.S. Steel a list of possible new names for the steel conglomerate, including USX, Maxus and Amcor. USX was chosen before the manufacturer discovered that the name had already been adopted by USX Telecenters, a California-based distributor of telephone systems, which subsequently filed a $50 million trademark-infringement lawsuit against the steel company. After Houston Natural Gas merged with InterNorth in July 1985, Lippincott & Margulies, a New York City-based firm, came up with the name Enteron...
...This is a drug society. We have prescription drugs, over-the-counter drugs and drugs you can buy in the grocery store," says Dr. Ronald K. Siegel, a psychopharmacologist at UCLA. "We have to understand that the drive to intoxication is irrepressible, unstoppable. It functions almost like hunger and sex. Our species has always gotten high on something, long before we were fully civilized primates...
...Siegel belongs to the British Brigade, a fifth column with members in 17 states. The brigade can field 600 men, including a mounted general and staff, 20 mounted dragoons, a battalion of artillery with five to seven cannons, four large infantry regiments, and ten additional companies of foot soldiers, including four units of Highlanders in kilts. The cavalry even has two professional stunt riders who can spill their horses. Next year the brigade is taking its act to England, possibly so that Cornwallis can get new instructions...
