After living in Paris for the summer, I have found that it is a rare sight to see women in this traditional Muslim attire. Here, it is doubtful that anyone actually avoids stares by wearing the burka in public, because they do stand out. However, a personal choice of how to dress, even if it does have religious associations, should not be proscribed by the government...
...This isn't baloney, but it is hardly the whole story - as you would discover if, instead of being mesmerized by the sight of Pudong, you were to turn around and look at the solid, early 20th century buildings of the Bund, just behind you. Modernity did not come to China because Deng Xiaoping said it should. As Rana Mitter of Oxford University argues, there had been modernizing streams in Chinese society long before 1978, and had some of them taken a different course, our view of what China represents for the future would be unrecognizable from the standard text...
...habits of the past. Ever since, however, Mugabe and ZANU have blocked and delayed Tsvangirai and the MDC. When I caught my plane to Harare, the new state was still only partly formed and Mugabe was deriding the MDC as "insolent." ...story of Sir Edward's "death pact" was at first sight an irresistible love story. His wife Joan, 74, a former ballerina, had a diagnosis of terminal liver and pancreatic cancer; because assisted suicide is illegal in Britain, they traveled to a Zurich clinic, where, for a fee of about $7,000 per patient, the group Dignitas arranges for death by barbiturate. "They drank a small quantity of clear liquid and then lay down on the beds next to each other," their son Caractacus said. They fell asleep and died within minutes, he reported, calling it a "very civilized" final...
...dissidents had even been released. In recent days, there had been hopes that the regime would try to placate or compromise with the opposition Green movement, particularly after the Supreme Leader's proclamation that a prison in south Tehran would be shut down after allegations of torture. But the sight of prominent reformists, looking dejected and dressed in gray prison garb and flip-flops, confessing to supposed crimes against the state while flanked by security guards, suggests the regime is becoming even more radicalized as it tries to quell the growing political turmoil...
