...Sigmund Freud stars in a segment that seems adapted for Masterpiece Theater. Brownshirted Nazis burst into the Vienna apartment of the founder of psychoanalysis, growling about "rich dirty Jews." They are cowed by Frau Freud's response: "We're middle-class clean Jews. That is why I ask you to wipe your feet." The master's cures are just as brisk and effective, the ideal length for docudrama. "You don't want to die," Freud assures a patient, "you want to get back into your mother." From the couch comes the reply, "You're sure...

...unsteady pastiche takes its place. For instance, Sigmund Freud (Sir Alec Guinness) pops up from time to time as Benjamin's mystical mentor, constantly reminding him of his breaches in psychiatric practice as well as his own unstable state of mind. Freud's witty, satirical comments do not ring true, though; instead, they remind us of Humphrey Bogart's advice to Woody Allen throughout Play It Again, Sam. ...Lovesick, which opens on Feb. 18, Moore is a middle-aged Manhattan psychiatrist who falls in love with a nubile patient and finds happiness under the ironic eyes of Sigmund Freud's fantasy-ghost (Alec Guinness). The film was written and directed by Marshall Brickman, who collaborated with Woody Allen on the screenplays of Sleeper, Annie Hall and Manhattan, and it has many of the funny, arch touches of Allen's best pictures. The early scenes, particularly, in which a motley group of patients pass through Moore's office, are hilarious, knowing satire at its best...

DIED. Anna Freud, 86, pioneer of child psychoanalysis, whose theories advanced the work of her famous father Sigmund; in London. She opposed those who advocated the analysis of pre-verbal children and emphasized the purposeful care of parents and teachers. Applying in practice what she asserted on paper (in eight eloquent volumes), the self-effacing Freud established the first day nursery in Vienna and trained a generation of followers at the celebrated Hampstead Child-Therapy Clinic in England. She habitually shunned publicity and deferred to the parent whom she nursed in life and steadfastly defended in death. "I didn...
