...announcer in one room, and in another room separated by a glass panel, the controlman who is responsible for whatever actually goes out on the air. The controlman changes the records, and switches the "air" for music to an announcement or ad when he gets a hand signal from the announcer. This method is slightly cumbersome, but it worked well when the changes from record to record to "spot" are few. It does not work well when a DJ uses all 45's, which must be changed every two or three minutes. It results in too much "dead air" - time...

Director David Wheeler creates the proper atmosphere of mysticism and terror with eerie noises, a dim stage, and a gilded idol. At times he over- does it--as when he lets the machinegun sounds that close the play and signal the death of Brother and Sister Rat go on and on. For the most part, though, he is in control...

Aiding Pioneer. Lovell's latest space scoop came only two months after Jodrell Bank successfully intercepted television signals being transmitted from the moon's surface by Luna 9, reproduced them on a newspaper facsimile machine, and immediately released them-a full 24 hours in advance of the Russians (TIME, Feb. 4). Before that, he was first to announce that Luna 2 had hit the moon, and that earlier lunar soft-landing attempts by the Russians had ended in failure. He has also beaten the Russians to the punch in revealing some of the first details of their manned...

Noting that Luna's signals sounded like "a skirl of bagpipes," Lovell relayed them by loudspeaker to reporters gathered at the observatory and provided an interpretive narrative of the flight. As the signal frequency decreased, he explained that Luna was accelerating under the pull of lunar gravity. A sudden increase in frequency followed by fading of the signal led Lovell to believe that a retrorocket had been fired, slowing Luna down. He interpreted the erratic signals that were received afterward to mean that the spacecraft had successfully achieved a 300-to 400-mile-high lunar orbit, but that...

...area-that A.T. & T. Chairman Frederick Kappel has called for a crackdown, and individual Bell companies are now declaring statewide "wars on obscene calls." Their most effective weapon is an electronic device known as "called-party holding," which the telephone company hooks up free. It consists of a small signal box that is linked to the nearest central office. By simply pushing the button on the box, the victim signals the central office, which immediately locks the circuit. Even if the caller hangs up, the circuit remains open and the telephone company can begin tracing the call...
