...Houston's Manned Spacecraft Center, where physicists and medical men will keep a constant vigil. In addition, Pioneer, Vela and other patrolling satellites will report any changes in solar radiation. Should SPAN report a suspicious-looking flare during the Apollo mission at the same time the satellites signal a corresponding increase in high-energy proton radiation, the astronauts in the vulnerable lunar module would be ordered back to the command module forthwith. They should need no more than four hours-well before the deadly mainstream of protons arrives-to dock with the orbiting command module (whose walls provide protection...

When the 2,491-lb. Venus 5 was 31,000 miles from Venus, Soviet ground controllers sent a signal that separated the instrument capsule from the speeding craft. Protected by a heat shield while its descent was slowing, the capsule eventually deployed a parachute and began radioing information about the temperature, pressure and chemical composition of the atmosphere. After 53 minutes of transmission, the capsule's signals abruptly ceased. With no word from the Russians, Western scientists concluded that the intense heat of the lower atmosphere had disabled the transmitters before the capsule crashed. They recalled that...

Sixty-six illustrations of Constable's signal accomplishments may now be seen at Washington's National Gallery, all from the private collection of Paul Mellon, president of the gallery. It was Constable's moral feeling for the countryside of England, outgoing Gallery Director John Walker points out in the catalogue, that is his principal achievement. "More than any other artist, he was able to embody in paint Wordsworth's 'Impulse from a Vernal Wood,' " Walker writes. ...Unperfect Society is a chronicle of the disintegration of Communism written by an insider. Once Marshal Tito's chief aide in the Yugoslav hierarchy, Djilas later spent nine years in prison for his iconoclastic writings. His signal offense was The New Class, published in 1957, in which he characterized the Communist bureaucracy as every bit as oppressive, materialistic and hierarchical as capitalism. On his release in 1966, he was prohibited from engaging in "political activity"-a usefully flexible admonition not to stir up controversy. But once again Djilas has defied Tito, his old comrade-in-arms, and brought...

When any vertebrate animal is "invaded" by foreign proteins-whether bacteria, viruses, or tissues from another animal as in a graft or transplant-the invaders soon meet one of the host's body cells that is armed with the appropriate antibody. This contact is a signal to the cell to divide. Its progeny also divide and soon there is an army of antibodies, each able to seize and hold two invading molecules. Powerful scavenger cells such as phagocytes then can go into action and effectively remove both combatants...
