After remaining silent about the discovery for seven months, the Cambridge team published its findings and tentative conclusions in Nature, setting off a flurry of activity among U.S. scientists. Focusing Cornell University's giant radio telescope near Arecibo, Puerto Rico, on the one pulsar whose position was given by the British, Astronomer Frank Drake confirmed the rapid, regular signal and discovered that it was ten times as powerful at 111 MH (for megahertz: 1,000,000 cycles per second) than at any other frequency. "This has been the biggest bombshell that I can remember in radio astronomy," he says...
Stewart credits Dean K. Whitla, acting Allston Burr Senior Tutor in Lowell House, with the idea of using ohmmeters for silent testing. The suggestion came after Arthur D. Trottenberg, Assistant Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, complained last December to Stewart about residents of Lowell who, bothered by the noise during testing periods, had disconnected the fire alarms in their rooms...
Difficult to Escape. Even though they had earlier insisted that Lübke remain silent, Chancellor Kurt Georg Kiesinger and his Cabinet now decided that Lübke should take his case to the people. After listening to a tape recording of his play, a Polish court sentenced Szpotanski to three years in prison for harming state interests...
...conversations are visually boring. A non-synchronized soundtrack permits Hunter to set his camera on exciting prospects -- Twelvetrees loping down the street toward Blaine--as the dialogue runs. (Unfortunately he didn't shoot the junkyard encounter between the two in the same way; we must suffer through a long silent discussion.) Enough of mechanics, however. The unsynchronized dialogue adds to Dream. Words when we don't expect them, silence when we do--it slips another strange note into Desire's distortion...
