This is not the first time that Caesar and cinema have met. Of the roughly 400 silent films adapted from Shakespeare's plays between 1899 and 1929, there are ten versions of Caesar, the first being a French effort of 1907. In the half century since 1929, about 50 sound films have been made, including three of Caesar, all American. The straightforward 1953 version, directed by Joseph Mankiewicz--with James Mason's Brutus, John Gielgud's Cassius. Marlon Brando's Antony, and the late Louis Calhern's Caesar--remains the only excellent Shakespearean film ever done in our country...
Many of the younger performers coming up came out of what we called "The Silent Generation" and were apolitical. But they had something else going for them which related. They were a post Kerouac group who were somewhat Bohemian in outlook and lifestyle. I looked at the broader picture, and they were part of a scene that was very important to me. I didn't know how that scene was going to develop. But whatever was happening, I wanted to find...
...Indonesia, 58,000 in Hong Kong. Last month Thailand repatriated 42,000 Cambodians at gunpoint, sending them back across the border to danger and possible death. Thousands are forcibly kept on ships in Hong Kong awaiting permission to go ashore. In a sense these are the lucky ones, because they have not been lost at sea. At least...

The contenders were two agents working for anonymous buyers and Art Dealer Andrew Ciechanowieski of London's Heim Gallery. As the salon fell silent with tension, the three repeatedly raised the price in jumps of $117,000. Finally, Ciechanowieski, nodding his head, raised the bid to $1.7 million-more than three times the amount ever paid for a single piece of furniture in an auction. All told, the collection fetched $12.8 million, which made...
Many of the nation's superhighways were eerily silent last week as the big 18-wheel diesel rigs ceased to roar. Occasionally there were other sounds: voices raised in anger, the thud of punches, and the crack of rifles sending bullets through the sides of trucks, shattering windshields, and sometimes hitting human flesh. Most of the nation's 100,000 independent, long-haul truckers were striking in protest against the rising cost (up 35% since the beginning of the year) and increasing scarcity of diesel fuel. Some merely stopped working. Others used their trucks to block access...
