...were tortures, Southern Scorchers. But it's 13 degrees outside and you're superfluously walking under a ladder on you way home with a copy of Atlanta Rhythm Section's Dog Days. Southern scorchers, yes, but trust to dear Harvard to warm the parts "Boogie Smoogie" "Dog Days" and "Silent Treatment" can't reach...
Browne is less adventurous on "Sleep's Dark and Silent Gate." Rather than build metaphor upon metaphor as in the stronger songs on his third album, Late for the Sky, he relies upon one image--the dark and silent gate--throughout the song. The remainder of the lyrics are direct but dull: "The only thing that makes me cry, is the kindness in my baby's eye." And the music functions only as a background motif for Browne's poetry, which isn't really worth spotlighting. Drummer Jeff Porcara could easily be pounding away with one hand tied behind...
...when the Matchseller in A Slight Ache shuffles into the Adams House Upper Common Room like some Boston Common exhibitionist--wearing a Balaclava helmet, Wellington boots and a rumpled black raincoat--the menacing power of his silent radio presence is instantly precluded. The question of whether he really exists, or whether he lives only in the minds of the conventional middle class couple whose back gate he has been haunting for months, has been answered. Although the accommodations for the 80-man crew were spartan by U.S. standards, the sub itself was skillfully designed for silent running, and construction details showed that the Russians "can turn these things out like Mexican fritters," as one Navy expert put it. Before the sub was retrieved, the U.S. knew almost nothing about Soviet torpedo technology. The Navy had also underestimated the sub's firepower. Its short-range (about 700 nautical miles) SSN5 missiles carried hydrogen-bomb warheads packing a much bigger punch than the uranium-fission weapons that were once the staple of Soviet defense. Very possibly...
...Korea. New revelations continue to reinforce the impression that, as one congressional leader admitted, "there's a lot of Korean money around, and a lot of guys are involved." Among the main figures in the federal probes of Korean influence peddling: former Representative Richard Hanna of California, a silent partner in an import-export business run by Tongsun Park, a Washington-based Korean businessman with a yen for winning friends in high places; Louisiana Democrat Otto Passman, a longtime Park crony; and former New Jersey Congressman Cornelius Gallagher. Meanwhile, on another front, there are charges that the Korean Central...
