TOMKAT'S BABY MISSION: ACCOMPLISHED His gift of a sonogram machine. Her preparations for a Scientology-approved silent birth. Their horde of midwife-like paparazzi, breathlessly awaiting the first contractions. "It was everything that we wanted it to be," TOM CRUISE told 20/20 on the birth of his daughter Suri, with fiancé KATIE HOLMES. "It was spiritual. It was powerful. It was indescribable. What words can you use? It's still something that I'm processing and keep reliving." The couple said the baby's name means "red rose" in Persian, which it does, and "princess" in Hebrew--which...

...hellish scene at the accident site. All evidence pointed to a nuclear reactor fire burning out of control in the gentle, rolling Ukrainian countryside ... The most frightening part of the nuclear accident was the radiation that spewed from the reactor and then was carried by winds on its silent, deadly path. At distances of perhaps 3 to 4 miles, victims stood a 50-50 chance of surviving, though not without bone-marrow and gastrointestinal-tract damage. Today, nearly all of the area's brick-clad buildings have been repurposed as bars, shops and galleries, flanked by chic loft apartments. It's a transformation that's helping to turn Switzerland's largest city from a buttoned-up financial capital into something approaching a fashionable metropolis...

...Martin Lee Anderson, 14, died Jan. 5, hours after arriving at a juvenile boot camp for stealing his grandmother's car and violating probation. A local coroner says sickle cell trait, not an altercation with boot camp guards, killed Anderson. But an eerily silent surveillance video shows Bay County deputies restraining, kicking and punching the boy, who at times appeared limp and unable to comply. The results of a second autopsy remain secret, but at least one coroner involved says the youth did not die of sickle cell, or any other natural causes...

...Alarmism—the environmental movement’s basic strategy—has led to this dead end. Since Rachel Carson’s “Silent Spring,” the movement has been dominated by doomsday scenarios. Even on the first Earth Day in 1970, biologist George Wald predicted that “civilization will end within 15 or 30 years unless immediate action is taken.” Fortunately, such apocalyptic forecasts have repeatedly proven to be wrong...
