Because of its mucky consistency, the flood tide took about an hour to course through the valley, leaving behind a thick mantle of silt and slime that hampered rescue operations for days afterward. Viewed from the air, reported TIME Correspondent Art White, the hollow "looked like a black corrugated moonscape." All told, 1,500 houses were destroyed or damaged and 4,000 people left homeless. More important, 92 are known dead, and almost as many are still missing; over 1,100 were injured...
...region-are an ugly but common sight in West Virginia. Like the one at Buffalo Creek, which was owned by the Buffalo Mining Co., a subsidiary of the Manhattan-based Pittston Co., they are built up from the residue that results from washing coal. The slime and silt settle, and the water that backs up behind the slag heap is often used again for washing the coal. Such dams in West Virginia have breached before. After the flood, the U.S. Geological Survey disclosed that in 1967 West Virginia state officials were warned that four waste piles in the state were...
National Responsibility. Two weeks ago, Sadat elaborated on his position by offering as a first step a plan for reopening the Suez Canal-now clogged by silt and disabled ships-after nearly four years of inactivity. Under the Sadat plan, Israeli troops would pull back from their Bar-Lev Line on the canal bank to a line in the vicinity of El Arish, a sleepy Sinai town 50 miles from Israel's 1967 border. Egyptian troops would cross the canal to take up positions and "assume national responsibility." After repairs, the canal would be open to the world...
...different approach would surely have helped Boise Cascade in its most painful environmental battle. Bulldozers had hardly begun carving the roads for a resort community-called Incline Village-on the Nevada shore of Lake Tahoe before conservationists denounced the company for contaminating the lake with silt and creating ugly scars in the alpine forest. As the company went through a maze of government agencies to win permission to build 3,000 homes, it met furious opposition at every point; so far, the company has been able to build only ten homes and four condominiums. Though other developers were almost entirely...
Mangrove forests in Vietnam traditionally grow very fast. They trap silt and function to increase land area, extending the shoreline out into the water at a rapid rate. Now, due to American herbicide use, that natural role has been reversed for about half of the forests. The trees are dead and the presence of crabs which eat seedlings insures that new trees will not soon return. Moreover, the major mangrove spraying was done five and six years ago-a major typhoon is likely soon which will probably greatly increase erosion and physically change the coastline and delta regions...
