...fields. Most notable Bolivian gain, however, is a gateway to the sea through the Paraguay River. Ever since the War of the Pacific (1879-1883), in which Chile defeated the combined Peruvian-Bolivian armies, Bolivia has sat in her Andean aerie without a handy water outlet for her tin, silver and oil. Between Bolivia and the Pacific there were 75 miles of none-too-friendly Chile. The final arbitration in 1929 of the Tacna-Arica dispute between Peru and Chile, in which Bolivia had hoped for a corridor, gave Bolivia nothing...

The daily radiation output is usually measured with instruments called silver-disk pyrheliometers in which the sun's radiation is transformed into heat measurable in calories. A solar recording station should be high, dry, nearly dustless, nearly hazeless. The Smithsonian Institution has two solar outposts at Table Mountain in California and Mt. Montezuma in Chile. Last week the Smithsonian announced that it would start a new solar observatory atop Burro Mountain...

Charles gradually became known for decorative panels inlaid with silver and gold leaf, of which last week the Addison Gallery showed 19. Maurice, upright, high-collared, with silvery hair and mustaches, became so deaf that when friends called at the studio they swished newspapers under the door to catch his eye. Only his daily stroll around Washington Square interrupted his painting. "When short skirts came into fashion," Van Wyck Brooks remembers, "he spoke...
