...finishing a race, never mind winning it, will often produce compelling sport. In the combined downhill in the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics, Miller was a nanosecond from disaster when he made what might have been the greatest 60 m.p.h. recovery in the history of skiing to claim a silver medal. He either lands on the podium or on his posterior. (See pictures of Bode Miller on the slopes...
...more than rare talent alone that separates the Collection--whose members include teen phenoms Mason Aguirre, 18, and Luke Mitrani, 15; 2002 Olympic gold medalists Ross Powers, 26, and Kelly Clark, 22; 2005 X-Games silver medalist Andy Finch, 24; and Gretchen Bleiler, 24, who is expected to take the women's half-pipe gold in Torino--from the rest of the snowboarding world. They also hemorrhage money and leave many would-be riders behind due to overcrowding. Using the new Silver Line train from South Station is only marginally slower, costs $1.25, and allows passengers to leave whenever is convenient rather than every other hour. For those who are too delicate to use public transportation I offer another solution: have the UC set up a system to coordinate cab sharing, allowing groups...
...shop floor of NAC Jewellers, a store in the South Indian city of Madras, is full of exquisitely wrought necklaces in gold and silver, but the prize possession of the owners is a photograph that hangs upstairs in a small office. It shows a tall crown studded with 4,000 diamonds and made from seven kilograms of gold. Four craftsmen from NAC Jewellers spent six months making the crown, at a cost of about $700,000. It now rests on a statue of the goddess Padmavathi Devi at the Tiruchanur Shrine in South India. Anantha Padmanaban, a partner...
