The story begins in the 1940s at a political dinner given in honor of Judge Simon Mannix, a shrewd, large-minded man who has been "mentioned" for the Supreme Court. He is well sketched by the author, and one impudent touch is superb: Mannix has a deaf son, she relates, and thus has learned to lipread. ...James Simon Kunen is only 20, and the introduction to his new book, The Strawberry Statement (Random House; $4.95), sounds like it. The youthful don't give-a-damnedness is deceptive. Kunen is one of the student radicals who occupied the president's office at Columbia University last spring; his accounts at the time made fascinating reading in the Atlantic and New York magazines. Strawberry Statement covers much of the same ground but goes beyond Columbia. It is, in fact, the meandering but often perceptive journal of a young rebel with a sense of humor...
...black-white contrast, and angles his camera on them stylizes the film as strikingly as Zero. But l'Atalante's dramatic structure progressively reveals the secrets of its very full characters. Who could imagine, for example, feeling deeply sympathetic toward the spirit, let alone the form, of Michel Simon (of Botudu)? Yet Vigo puts him in places and relations to other characters and to the camera, which bring us closer and closer to him. Finally the wife goes into his cabin which is filled with souvenirs of the seven seas. Simon's pride as he shows off his precious machines...
